Sun Salutations is better than waking up to Folger’s in your cup.

Ok, let’s get this right, though. I drink coffee. I love coffee. I can’t function to lunch without it. However, I have found a wonderful way to get my day going even before that first sip of dark steamy fuel. Yoga.

Why Sun Salutations is a great way to start your day.

I am not a morning person. At all. If I could, I would probably sleep till 10am every day. However, I have this little voice in my head that says WAKE UP at 7am. Oh wait, that’s not in my head. That’s my daughter. I have to have a schedule for myself (because I’m a Type A), so the goal is to wake up before her so I can, you know, shower for the day. But to get out of bed is soooo hard!

I recently wrote a post, though, about loving and paying more respect to my body, and by doing so, that includes exercising. I also loathe exercising, but yoga, I can do! So, I roll out of bed, stretch my arms way above my head, bend over and (attempt to touch my toes), stretch one leg back, stretch to legs back, arch my back, put my butt in the air, and breathe. Downward facing dog (that’s where we are in the movements, by the way) is my favorite position. It stretches, it gets blood flowing to my head, and allows my neck to relax. Then, feet come together as I slowly roll up, raise my arms out and above my head, and back down again. Then I repeat, switching the feet this time.

I do a whole set (one for each leg) three times because that is all I allow myself time for. It really does help get my body going in the morning, though. It’s not exercise, but it’s a great stretch and core building set of movements. It allows my muscles and creaky bones and tired blood to wake up and get me going for the day. I always feel better on the days I do it. (I do skip it on occasion. Sometimes my body says, SLEEP! and hey, I have to listen to my body.)
